The Blow Up and eulogising

Jazz Rocking with the Blow Up

Bev and me went off to see The Blow Up last night and they are great. The Drummer whose name I forget (sorry) wins the size-of-kit-to-level-of-noise-ratio award by a long mile.

Go see them the next time you get an opportunity. This brings me to the generosity of musicians and that it is often a joy to behold. I have been lucky to meet and learn from fabulous people over the last few years and through Bev, have witnessed how far out of their way some people go to share their love of music and even give away their secrets.  For Example; Dave Holdsworth and his bezzie mate Herbie Flowers have involved themselves in many local projects including the sadly now defunct Rock Shop at Dartington. Lewis Riley is locally known as a great mentor. Julian Marshall certainly helped me personally a great deal.

But getting back to the Blow Up band. The keyboardist is Tom Unwin and he runs regular jazz workshops that clearly empower the participants. He is hugely generous as a musician and I (for one) applaud him for it. I hope I’ll pluck enough courage to join the next run of his sessions. He also reminds me of the late Fred Legg who helped make the Totnes Jazz workshop the great institution it is.

So join me to raise a thankful glass to all great musicians including the ones I missed out above – there are so many of them! People like this make the world a better place and its one of the reasons I love music so much.
